Contract UX/Front-End Engineer

Cambridge, Massachusetts
Work Type: Contract

Company and Team - The ocean covers 71% of our planet, yet we know less about it than the surface of Mars. Apeiron Labs is on a mission to change that. We're not just building underwater vehicles—we're building systems that will reshape weather prediction, revolutionize aquaculture, transform shipping, and strengthen national security. We're developing breakthrough technologies that slash ocean sensing costs by orders of magnitude.

Join a crew of battle-tested subsea specialists, robotics experts, firmware architects, and full-stack cloud engineers. This is a unique opportunity to engineer the future of ocean intelligence and contribute to humanity's understanding.

When we are wildly successful, we will do for ocean sensing and monitoring what low-cost launch and the LEO satellite revolution have done for earth observation from space.

The role

Help us redefine the customer experience of planning four-dimensional ocean data collection! Apeiron Labs is looking for a User Experience (UX) designer to help design the next-generation mission-planning and mission-control interfaces for its revolutionary ocean sensing platforms. This is a contract position expected to run for several weeks. Although UX experience is most important, Apeiron would consider having a candidate who is also a front-end developer work on prototype implementation of the designs. This would extend the duration of the contract by several more weeks.

  • Substantial professional experience as a UX designer
  • Substantial professional experience designing in Figma
  • Prior professional experience working with geospatial data and map-based interfaces

Nice to haves

  • Experience with marine charts and navigation

For a hybrid UX + Front-End candidate, additional considerations include:

    • JS/TS expertise
    • JS/TS bundling expertise
    • Experience using and designing web APIs (REST, etc.)
    • Solid git and GitHub skills
  • Professional experience working with maps in the browser, e.g. ESRI or similar
  • Experience with React (even if only to tell us why not to use React and what to do instead)
